BALMS, LOTIONS AND CREAMS

General information

Cannabis-infused topicals is the newest thing on marijuana market. Lotions, balms and creams with cannabis allow getting outstanding therapeutic benefits without a sign of intoxication. Perfect for medical needs!

Having this topicals within a hand`s reach is helpful when there is a need to get urgent pain relief, to treat wounds and scratches, to heal bruises and sunburns. Moreover, they might also be used as a regular treatment for problems that require long-term application: scars removing, arthritis treatment, skin care.

Balms, lotions and creams infused with cannabis are applied directly to the damaged area. They get absorbed by the skin but do not get to the bloodstream, so all the marijuana-related effects are only local. If you are looking for a way to get high, topicals is not your choice.

5 facts you need to know about balms, creams and lotions

Are you going to use cannabis-infused topicals for the first time? Do you want to learn more about methods of their application and therapeutic value? Find all answers to your questions in this article. Right now, check 5 most important facts about creams, balms and lotions infused with marijuana:

They provide no side effects

When you smoke or vape marijuana on a regular basis, you might face plenty of negative side effects: lung diseases, respiratory system irritation, addiction. With edibles, the most common problems are overintoxication, psychoses and hallucinations. Topicals are unique in this sense: they do not result in any negative side effects; you get only health benefits and nothing more. No psychoactive effects, no health problems, no overdose.

They are applied only locally

To get the effect you are looking for, you need to clearly define the area that needs treatment. Creams and balms are applied locally to the damaged skin or to the skin that requires extra care. Make sure that you avoid eye and mouth area.

Cannabinoid amount may vary

The most active component in such topicals is certainly cannabis. However, not all products are made equal. They differ by the type of cannabinoid and its amount in the cream. Two common choices are CBD and THC. The first one is frequently used as anti-inflammation treatment while the second is perfect for painkilling. Many topical products contain the combination of both prominent cannabinoids for the best therapeutic outcomes.

Secondary ingredients are important

While everyone pays attention to the cannabis component within the product, many users forget to check the other ingredients as well. The production of certain cannabis creams requires only the use of organic components including therapeutically potential plants like arnica, pepper, eucalyptus, lavender, etc. However, there are the cheaper versions of body painkilling lotions and creams that include artificial additives and odorants. It is certainly recommended to give preference to natural cosmetics.

You will not fail a drug test if you are using cannabis-infused lotions or creams.

These products are working only on dermal and subdermal skin layers. As they do not get absorbed to blood, it is impossible to find their traces on the drug test. While some topical products are too risky to use before the drug test (transdermal patches), creams, balms and lotions are all safe choices. The only rule: do not forget to wash your hands (and nails!) carefully after the application to avoid cannabis coming into your eyes or mouth.

Why use balms, lotions and creams?

These cannabis-infused topicals are used for a number of reasons. Some of them require only temporary, accidental use while the other are applied on the regular basis. Check the list of the most common indications to use cannabis topicals:

Temporary use:

  • To kill pain. Creams and lotions are rubbed into skin to provide quick and effective relief from pain;

  • To treat sore muscles;

  • To get rid of anxiety. “Sleep balms” usually include a number of natural plant components and are applied under the nose and on the temples of the head.

  • To fight skin inflammation (including sunburns, arthritis, bruises). Effectiveness of cannabis-infused lotions against inflammation is proved by numerous studies;

  • To heal wounds.

Regular use:

  • As anti-age cosmetics. Creams on CBD basis help to save the skin health and elasticity;

  • As a lip balm;

  • As a way to remove scars (requires long-term application);

  • As a foot cream for overworked feet;

  • As a supplement for quick muscle recovery for athletes.

How do cannabis-infused topicals actually work?

When you apply creams or lotions to skin, cannabinoids that are present in topical products bind to certain body receptors called CB1 and CB2. These are the same receptors that get influenced by our natural endocannabinoid system that regulates main body functions of human beings. This way, cannabis gets a chance to determine what we are feeling and bring immense relief.

The most interesting fact about the way topicals work is in its alikeness with natural body protective functions. This is one of the reasons why cannabis-infused topicals is a treatment with no side effects – human body is receptive to it and does not repulse it as it happens with some medicine.

Dosing matters!

Each individual has his own unique sensitivity limit. That is why the dosage necessary to get the desirable effect differ greatly depending on a person. With edibles, for example, it is a problem, since overdose is too unpleasant. However, start low-go slow is not a motto for topicals. With creams, balms and lotions, you can never get too much, so be generous if you are expecting a quick relief. Getting an extra layer will certainly not hurt.

The effects from the use of topicals might come within minutes. This fact allows to recommend cannabis-infused creams as a treatment for acute and painful conditions. The estimated duration of effects is 4-6 hours.

Best DIY recipes: cannabis-infused lip balm and aloe vera face cream

The best way to make sure your cannabis topicals are 100% organic is to make them on your own. Get two best recipes of cannabis-infused topical products:

Lip balm

Lip area is one of the most sensitive in your body. Unlike skin, it does not generate sebum so it cannot be moistened on its own. Lip balm is the best way to prevent lips from getting chapped and to make them soft and healthy.

Cannabis-infused lip balm serves a double-purpose: it is not only useful as a protective topical product, but it also heals the existing pain from chapped lips. The provided recipe for the lip balm infused with cannabis include vitamin E, beeswax and eucalyptus oil as additive components. Each of them fulfills the definite purpose: vitamin E helps to heal wounds and reduce scars and wrinkles, beeswax is killing bacteria, and eucalyptus is antiviral. This homemade lip balm is recommended for everyday use.

What you need:

  • coconut cannabis oil – 1 tablespoon;

  • beeswax – 1 tablespoon;

  • eucalyptus oil – 2 drops;

  • Vitamin E oil – 1 drop;

  • lip containers;

  • double boiler;

  • micro tip funnel.

Instructions:

  1. Make a coconut cannabis oil in advance.

    For that aim, mix 1 cup of coconut oil and 1 cup of grinded cannabis flower and heat them in a slow cooker at 200-240 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of 4 hours to decarboxylate. After that, strain the oil using a cheesecloth and let cool. You can use this coconut cannabis oil for a number of different recipes of both topicals and edibles.

  2. Mix coconut cannabis oil with beeswax and low heat the mass in a double boiler until it melts.

  3. Add eucalyptus oil and Vitamin E oil and stir thoroughly.

  4. Pour the hot substance into the lip containers.

  5. Cool at a room temperature for an hour. Store in the fridge.

Aloe vera face cream

This cream is based on two main components: cannabidiol and aloe vera. The unified properties of both allow to achieve high anti-inflammatory, healing and regenerative effect. The cream created on such basis will help to hydrate skin, reduce irritation, and regenerate cells. It is recommended for daily use.

What you need:

  • CBD oil – 10 drops;

  • coconut oil – 0.5 cup;

  • beeswax – 0.25 cup;

  • jojoba oil – 2 tablespoons;

  • aloe vera – 1 cup;

  • essential oil of your choice;

  • double boiler;

  • cream container.

Instructions:

  1. Mix coconut oil, beeswax and jojoba oil and heat in a double boiler until the substance begins to melt.

  2. Stir well and let cool for an hour.

  3. Introduce aloe vera and blend carefully. Blender can still be used on this stage.

  4. Add CBD drops and essential oils.

  5. Stir by hand to arrange the even distribution.

  6. Dispense into cream containers.

Essential oils that you choose for the cream can help you to achieve different effects. For example, lavender or geranium will reduce anxiety, myrrh will bring relaxation, and basic or lemon is able to provide the energy boost. DIY recipes of cannabis-infused topicals allow a space for experiments: you can create your own fully natural product with unique properties and no psychoactive effects.
