GUMMIES

Meet cannabis gummies

Do you know what edible was top selling in 2018? It is a cannabis gummy — a chewable sweet with sugar topping infused with marijuana. Chewing cannabis is a perfect alternative to smoking and a double pleasure for weed lovers and sweet teeth.

Cannabis gummies are represented in various shapes, flavors and composition. Learn more about each type and production technology in this article.

Classification of gummies

Marijuana-infused gummies are classified according to different criteria. They differ by:

  1. type of cannabis plant used. In dispensaries, you can find Indica, Sativa or Hybrid. Indica makes you more relaxed, Sativa brings a euphorical state, and a hybrid is a combination of both.

  2. shape. There is a range of shapes of chewable cannabis products: tubes, belts, rings, drops, straws, etc. In fact, they are the exact copies of sweets for children.

  3. cannabinoid content. The label on the pack always indicates the cannabinoid content: 10 mg, 500 mg. These numbers mean how much cannabinoid there is in a whole pack. The amount per piece depends on quantity of pieces and can sometimes be indicated on the label, too. In commercial products, the cannabinoids are evenly distributed between separate gummies.

  4. CBD and THC ratio.

    CBD gummies are very popular because they are not intoxicating, tasty, and have potential therapeutic value. THC sweets are valued because of the euphorical state it brings to the consumer. However, many sorts of gummies have mixed cannabinoid content. The popular choices are 1:1 THC and CBD or 2 CBD for 1 THC. These combinations allow to reduce the intoxication together with getting the maximal strength.

  5. cannabinoid / terpene ratio.

    The cannabis oil used for production of gummies can be received by a number of ways. Some extraction methods suppose the distillation of clear cannabinoids, another save the balance between different valuable plant components. Full spectrum products are those where the balance between cannabinoids and terpenes of marijuana flower remains undisturbed. This is important because of the entourage effect: cannabinoids and terpenes, which are in synergy, bring greater medicinal benefits.

  6. flavor and additives.

    Cannabis gummies have different fruit flavors: strawberry, banana, mint, raspberry, etc. You can choose according to your preferences, but it is recommended to consider whether this flavor is ensured by using real fruit or chemical colorants and flavoring agents.

What benefits you get with cannabis gummies

A secret of popularity of cannabis gummies is in the number of benefits it brings to the consumer. Here is the list of key advantages you get selecting this product to satisfy your needs in marijuana:

  • medical benefits (relief from stress and anxiety, pain killing, blocking inflammation);

  • high effects (a feeling of overall happiness, euphoria, creativity boost);

  • effective dosage (each serving has its definite cannabinoid amount);

  • a chance to use on-the-go (though, it is not recommended for beginners);

  • convenient storage (storing in the fridge is just sufficient).

Consume with caution

The main danger associated with the consumption of cannabis gummies is treating them the same way as common sweets. This approach is not just wrong but dangerous. Even though marijuana overdose is not considered a serious illness, it might lead to highly negative effects like paranoia, hallucinations and psychoses. Moreover, the user in state of high intoxication is capable of harming himself or someone else. That is why all the experiments must be held strictly at home.

Another threat is connected with storing gummies. There is a great risk that children or friend in your surrounding might get a try without your permission. A person that is not knowledgeable about the content, might face significant negative outcomes. Be sure to keep your weed products far from anyone`s reach.

Sublingual absorption

Most edibles act with delay — in an hour or few. That is because the active cannabinoid does not come to blood directly but get absorbed through the digestive system. With gummies, the same rules also act. However, there is one sight difference — cannabinoids might be sublingually absorbed.

Under the tongue or near the cheeks, we have thick mucosal membranes that allow cannabinoids to absorb directly into the bloodstream. To ensure this way of absorption, all you need to do is to suck a gummy before chewing to let it melt a little. The effect you will get this way will be like this: just after consumption, you get immediate high, then there is a break for an hour, and a second wave of high when the gummies get digested.

How to make cannabis gummy bears at home?

The most popular gummy is certainly a gummy bear. However, when you purchase them from a dispensary or other store, they might contain sugars, fats, or other unhealthy additives. Is that what you truly want?

Fortunately, this treat can be easily produced in home conditions. For that, you will need:

  • 70 ml of water;

  • 140 ml of fruit puree;

  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice;

  • 3 tablespoons of gelatin;

  • 2 to 3 teaspoons of cannabis tincture (the more you take the stronger the effect will be);

  • sugar (optionally);

  • condiment bottle or clean medicine dropper;

  • silicone molds (gummy bears shape).

The process of making cannabis gummy bears is not complicated:

  1. Mix water, fruit puree and lemon juice in a saucepan and heat at minimal temperatures until you get a uniform substance.

  2. Add a cannabis tincture to the mixture and stir well.

  3. Sift gelatin, whisking carefully after you add each tablespoon.

  4. Use a condiment bottle or drops to pour the ready liquid into the silicone molds.

  5. Place silicone molds carefully to the fridge to cool down for a quarter of an hour.

  6. Remove gummies and roll them in sugar to avoid their sticking together.

Now that your cannabis gummy bears are ready, you need to take care of the proper storage. Homemade gummies must be stored in a cool dry place for a week or two, best if you use an airtight container. They do not last as long as commercial sweets because of the natural composition, but DIY sweets are definitely the healthier choice for the lower price.

What to do if you are TOO HIGH?

Marijuana overdose with edibles is not a rare occasion. But one thing is experiencing it safely at home and completely the other is when you have some important plans for the day. What can you do to low down the intoxication level?

Here is the list of salutary measures that will make you feel back to normal:

  • Take some CBD medicine that is anti-intoxicating. It blocks the high effect and is used as the most popular treatment of THC addiction or overdosage.

  • Drink much clean water.

  • Go into sports. Exercising blocks the signals of excessive high that your body has, and the intoxication dissolves.

  • Take a sleep. Even a quick nap will be helpful.

  • Eat fatty food. It helps THC to get metabolized faster.

  • Take a cold shower. Though it certainly does not feel appealing to you, it truly works.

Even if all these measures will not entirely kill intoxication, you will definitely feel much better. Anyway, the best prevention is taking care about the appropriate dosage in advance.

State prohibition of cannabis gummies

In 2018, Washington state`s Liquor and Cannabis Board has announced the unexpected decision: ban the sales of all cannabis candies and gummies. Dispensaries and stores of the state have a chance to sell the existing products by April, 2019. After this date, any trading involving the indicated goods will be considered illegal.

The main reason for such a change in a state policy was the unpleasant statistics. Children find cannabis-based sweets designed exclusively for adults and consider them to be common sweets. As a result, there are numerous cases of poisoning, toxication and other serious negative health consequences among the young age kids.

Children are not the only victims. There are also unsuspecting people that might be deceived by the visual resemblance of cannabis gummies with the ordinary ones. One of the bright examples was the case of Colorado pilot that has accidentally taken his friend`s cannabis sweet and was fired after testing for drugs.

Governments of the other states still have not demonstrated a reaction to this popular problem, but it is likely that they will follow the example of Washington.
