BEVERAGES

Why drinking?

Have you ever been interested in drinking your weed instead of smoking or eating?

There currently exists plenty of ways to use marijuana: smoking, vaping, dabbing, consuming in edibles, using in topicals, etc. Drinks is one of the easiest and most effective ways of cannabis consumption. It has a lot of advantages in comparison with food edibles: it is easy to consume and the negative effects are close to a minimum.

What are cannabis beverages?

Cannabis beverages are any drinks infused with marijuana. The most common way of infusion is with the oil-based cannabis. This category of products includes almost any drinks you can imagine: tea, coffee, beer, juice, milk, lemonade and even water.

The leap in the popularity of cannabis beverages, which took place last year, attracted the attention of big market players. One of the loudest headline news was the announce of Coca Cola, which said that the company is giving consideration to having cannabidiol as one of the ingredients of its beverages.

How cannabis drinks differ from each other

There are currently more than 100 different kinds of cannabis drinks in the market. The most popular are: tea, coffee, juices and syrups, hops (alternative to beer) and wine. You can even find water-soluble cannabinoids that can be added to any drink or dish to make it an edible. All cannabis beverages get distinguished by:

  1. presence or absence of the alcohol. The brightest example of alcoholic drinks is the weed wine. Despite its popularity, it is not recommended to mix cannabis and alcohol because of predicted negative health outcomes. It is proven that using these two drugs together strengthens the negative effects of each one. That is why most cannabis drinks you meet are alcohol-free.

  2. flavor. It does not matter what cannabis strain was used in the production process. Commercial products contain no weed smell or taste due to emulsification process. The final drink flavor is reached by using additives, so everyone can choose according to his preferences.

  3. cannabinoid ratio. Three most widely used cannabinoids for beverages are THC, CBD and CBN. THC-infused drinks take you high, CBD is valued for their therapeutic benefits, and CBN has a sedative effect. Their combinations allow to create beverages designed specifically for a definite purpose. For example: a tea that consists 5 mg CBN and 3 mg THC is helping to fall asleep quickly, and the proportion 2 THC :1 CBD is intended for activity boost and joyful mood.

Keep it low

If you are on the verge of experimenting with drinkable edibles, ensure a mild start. Take no more than 5 mg for a first try and check your condition afterwards. It is important to know that the effects of cannabinoid consumption with beverages come within 15-20 minutes after drinking, so do not hurry with conclusions.

This is the main difference between drinks and food edibles: the latter need a few hours to be digested while beverages provide much faster outcomes.

Benefits of weed drinking

Consuming cannabis beverages have a number of benefits in comparison with edibles or weed smoking:

  1. convenience. What can be simpler than take a sip of a favorite cannabis drink? No more need to use special equipment to get high or to feel relieved.

  2. even distribution. Even commercial based edibles can be unevenly distributed. Take chocolate, for example. There are always more cannabinoids on the sides of the chocolate bar. With drinks, it is different. Cannabinoids spread evenly within the liquid and do not sink out.

  3. quick effect. With edibles, you need to wait for hours to feel something, while beverages provide results in minutes.

  4. alternative to alcohol. Cannabis non-alcoholic drinks are frequently used as the alternative to alcohol. Despite alcohol and marijuana both being drugs, the first produces much more negative health consequences.

The miracle of CBD

2018 was claimed to be a year for CBD. More and more cannabis products on cannabidiol basis are sold and bought on a daily basis. What are the reasons of popularity for this cannabinoid?

There are mainly two reasons: medicinal and legal. As for the first one, it is a well-known fact that CBD is the secret of most health advantages of cannabis consumption. It helps to fight pain and inflammation, reduce stress and anxiety, and always stay in control. Moreover, it has no psychoactive properties and can be used as a treatment for THC overdosage. Wide range of CBD applications attract medical users that replace their common pills with cannabis-based medicine.

As for the second reason, CBD-infused drinks are more popular because they have greater area of permission. Many states prohibit marijuana for recreational use but allow CBD-based medicine for therapeutic needs.

Making cannabis drinks at home

If you have once tried cooking homemade edibles, you will definitely have no problem with beverages. Below you can find the easiest recipes for most popular cannabis-infused drinks:

Cannabis tea

It is one of the healthiest beverages among edibles. The medicinal benefits of this liquid sounds magic: supporting heart, improving the work of respiratory system, reducing stress and pain level and even preventing the Alzheimer`s disease.

To cook cannabis tea, you need to know that cannabinoids are not soluble in water so you have to use butter or milk in it. Here is the actual recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 g of cannabis (buds, leaves, kief);

  • 1 spoon of butter;

  • 4 cups of boiling water.

How to prepare:

  1. Boil water and dissolve butter in it.

  2. Add strained cannabis and simmer tea for 15 min.

  3. Remove plant material with a sieve.

  4. Pour tea into a cup.

The possible alternative for this recipe is using a cannabutter instead of cannabis and butter. Important: do not expect to feel high after the first gulp; evaluate the result in 15-20 min.

Cannabis milk

It is one of the basic products, which can be used in milkshakes, hot chocolate or coffee drinks. The «must have» with cannabis milk is using a full fat milk that is rich in fats.

Ingredients:

  • 0.5-1 g of cannabis;

  • 250 ml of full-fat milk.

How to prepare:

  1. Grind cannabis finely.

  2. Heat milk to almost-boiling state.

  3. Add grinded cannabis and stir well.

  4. Simmer for an hour at middle temperatures to let weed decarboxylate.

  5. Cool the mixture.

  6. Remove the plant matter with a cheesecloth and enjoy the drink.

Lemonade

This recipe is perfect for hot summer days. Lemonade is made two ways:

  1. By adding a cannabis tincture to the glass of homemade lemonade,

  2. By cooking a cannabis syrup of sugar, water and cannabis (mixed and cooked at a low boil) and using it in your homemade drinks.
