Crumble is a potent honey-colored cannabis extract that got popular due to its versatile nature. The name of this concentrate is connected with its ability to get decomposed or «crumbled» in your hand.
Crumble is a non-transparent, yellow-colored extract. Shades of color may differ from light golden to dark yellow hue and are mostly determined by the choice of cannabis flower and production technology. Crumble is very similar to honeycomb in appearance that is why it is sometimes referred to as a «honeycomb wax».
Its consistency is soft and brittle. It is the driest and the thickest among all the marijuana concentrates; it is due to these qualities that the «crumbling» effect appears.
Rich aroma: benefit or disadvantage?
Crumble is one of the most aromatic concentrate kinds. It is achieved by retaining the terpene components during the vacuum purge (by using low temperatures). However, there is the other side of the coin — the well-flavored crumble is rarely solvent-free, because residual hydrocarbons left from solvents get removed at the same temperatures as the terpenes so it is a challenge to remove one saving the other.
Despite this fact, crumble is valued for being a highly potent cannabis concentrate. It is a form of butane hash oil (BHO) that was purged and whipped. As well as the other solvent-based extracts, crumble has extremely high THC level, about 60-70%. It is worth noting that using a BHO (as well as other potent strains with high THC) leads to having a proven psychological dependence on cannabis.
Ways to consume crumble
Crumble can be consumed in plenty of different ways, which vary in effects greatly. The reason for this versatility is that this extract is easily crumbled into small pieces and thus can be added to weed. To perform the same thing with shatter, for example, one has to warm it up to the honey-like texture. The whole procedure is inconvenient, time-consuming and thus not as popular as crumble smoking.
The most popular ways of consuming crumble are the following:
Adding it to a joint or a blunt
When making a blunt or a joint, crumble is put inside the roll on top of marijuana flower just in the center of a tobacco or rolling paper. This combination of a plant cannabis and a crumble lets a smoker experience both high effects of a strain and natural flower aroma.
Pipe or bong smoking
This way also supposes combining crumble with marijuana flower. Crumble must be put on top of the weed, greatly adding in potency to the final mixture.
This method supposes that crumble will be vaporized using special devices (called dab rigs or dab bongs) and then inhaled. Do not confuse common smoking bongs with the dab bongs: the first are bigger in size and meant for smoking a cannabis flower, while the second are designed specifically for dabbing potent strains.
A small piece of crumble material taken with a dabber spoon is put onto the nail, which was preliminarily heated to the necessary temperature. Having reached the nail, a crumble begins to vaporize instantly. Put a cap on the nail to capture the vapor and inhale it on the opposite side.
There is also the easier way of dabbing a concentrate — using an e-nail. This device is a smart alternative of the common gas-powered torch. It gets connected to the dab rig the same way as the common nail and the process remains unchanged except for the fact that with the electric nail it is easier to maintain the necessary temperature for dabbing.
How to store crumble properly?
You might have seen crumble stored in a parchment paper. Do not repeat this popular mistake! Being stored the inappropriate way, a crumble dries out, changes its color into the darker one and loses its rich natural aroma.
So, how to store crumble properly? Use special air-tight silicone containers and keep them in cool dry places. The benefits of these containers is that they do not let oxygen or excessive moisture come in. Protect your extract from heat and direct sunlight and it will last much longer, because high temperatures activate the cannabinoids inside the material.
Appearance in the market
The assortment of marijuana dispensaries of these days are no longer limited to bud, joints and weed candies. Plenty of highly potent extracts, including crumble, are now on the peak of their popularity. But this has not been for long. Solvent-based marijuana concentrates first appeared no earlier than in 1990s, and since that time they have only added in popularity.
While concentrates are still a novelty, marijuana products have the age-old history. Hashish and products on its basis were consumed for centuries until the innovations in cannabis sphere began to appear. Marijuana legalization makes a huge push towards new experiments and the market meets potent extracts with high THC, CBD-based products for everyday or medical use, new technologies for making marijuana products purer and safer.
How is crumble produced?
Like all most potent strains, crumble is a concentrate produced with the help of a solvent. The most popular one is butane, but propane and ethanol can be used as well. The main task of a solvent is to extract the THC, the principal psychoactive marijuana component. The higher THC level is, the more potent the concentrate gets.
The general technique of producing crumble is as follows:
Selecting marijuana flower material. Among factors that can influence the final outcome, there are: sort of cannabis flower chosen, its genetics and environment. These factors determine the aroma, taste and effect of a crumble.
Blasting the cannabis flower in the extraction system. Before adding a solvent, the material has to be greatly dispersed.
Preparing the solvent and applying it to the plant material. This is the stage when present cannabinoids get extracted from the flower mass.
Purging the THC-rich material in the oven to get rid of the solvent. Full vaporization of the solvent happens at the long purging with high temperatures. For crumble, the temperatures range from 110 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit and the purging time is 1-3 days depending on the strain.
Chilling and intensive agitation of the concentrate. Having been agitated, the mass becomes thick and lingering.
Whipping the concentrate to add more oxygen to it. The continuous whipping creates a crumbling effect.
Note that the production of crumble is a highly complicated process that must be performed exclusively by the field professionals. Moreover, all the solvent-based extractions suppose the presence of flammable gases (butane is extremely volatile), so crumble manufacturing requires the special lab areas.
Self-created laboratories for concentrate manufacturing frequently result in violent explosions and are strictly prohibited by the law .
Crumble, wax, shatter: what`s the difference?
What do three most popular and potent strains have in common? Almost everything. All the difference is held in the way of manufacturing. Extracting THC component from the cannabis flower is held in the same way, but the final stage is different:
For shatter, the final concentrate is taken unchanged and non-agitated, it is just wrapped in the paper to make the thin shape.
For wax, the concentrate must be greatly agitated to change its texture.
For crumble, the purged oil gets agitated first and whipped after that to make a honeycombed structure.
The other difference may be in the used temperatures of purging, for shatter it is slightly lower than for the other two kinds.
How to determine crumble purity and potency?
Selecting the strain, consumers usually pay attention to the color and density of the material, supposing that the purity and potency of the concentrate can be evaluated by eye. Unfortunately, this approach won`t work.
Light crumble does not mean a pure crumble, the color is an indicator of the plant material used and a way of production, but not of presence or absence of the residual solvents. Same way, a crumble with a thick brittle structure is not guaranteed to be more potent than the milder one.
The evaluation of purity and potency of the extract can be made exclusively in the laboratory. Only lab testing might discover whether the product is solvent-free and what THC level it has.
How to rehydrate crumble?
The improper storing may lead to the situation when your crumble gets dried and becomes a powder at a hand touch. Do not panic! It just needs a little rehydration.
So, how to add moisture to a dry crumble? The most popular ways are the following:
Using a wet paper towel. This fluid absorption method must be used in case when the maximum rehydration is necessary. The wet towel is added to the container where the crumble is stored, tightly closed, and left for some time. Check the state of your crumble and the towel every two hours until you get the desirable effect.
Using a wet bread or lettuce leaf. This method also provides a good level of rehydration. Perform the same actions with the wet bread and lettuce, but let it stay a little longer.
Using fruit peels. This method is different from the previous two ones because it requires much longer time for rehydration (sometimes it is necessary to wait for a few days) and adds the new aroma to a crumble. The popular choices are orange, lime and banana. Trying to rehydrate your crumble this way requires lots of patience and permanent control, but the efforts are worth it!
